Emphasis on Quality

18/10/2011

A lot of work was done last term, now the emphasis must be on quality.

Tactics
On chesstempo.com the aim is not how many puzzles can be done. The new aims are related to how many you get right, and how high you can push your rating. Every jump of  about one hundred points will bring a new set of puzzles, that will be a bit harder, so it is a big challenge.

The first aim is for everyone to get their accuracy to over 70% correct. If your percentage is already at 70%, see how high you can get it. Of course, getting to 70% is only half the battle, as you then have to stay above 70% correct.

The second aim is to push your ratings up by at least 100 points from where they are now.

Here are the statistics so far:
Goombaman 1982 (RD 44); 2880 at 61%. (Aim higher rating than me! 2183 at present!)
Stargaze 1884 (RD 79); 285 at 69%. (Aim 2000)
Wilamal 1672 (RD 62); 1058 at 70%. (Aim 1800)
Harans 1555 (RD 34); 4629 at 64%. (Aim 1650)
Ultimax2 1506 (RD 34); 2684 at 64%. (Aim 1650)
Mae.maye 1498 (RD 45); 518 at 62%. (Aim 1650)
Queensgambit17 1472 (RD 37); 1055 at 68%. (Aim 1600)
Chrisfu 1449 (RD 60); 565 at 69%. (Aim 1600)
Hbchess1 1434 (RD 35); 375 at 62%. (Aim 1600)
Jfay 1420 (RD 35); 1182 at 64%. (Aim 1600)
Joshstar001 1405 (RD 44); 516 at 68%. (Aim 1600)
Bobby0528 1296 (RD 67); 761 at 68%. (Aim 1500)

Only wilamal is at 70% accuracy. Who will be the most accurate by the end of this term? Take more time over each puzzle, and push that accuracy level up!

More accuracy will help your rating to rise quicker. See how long it takes to reach the aims I have posted. If you have the same aim as someone else, then try to beat then to it.

Openings
It is time for all these players to start specialising in some openings. The most important opening to study is the one you will play as both black and white. This opening represents a special part of chess for each player as they get to see things from either side. For example, when I’m white I now play 1.d4. When I’m black and my opponent plays 1.d4, I play 1..d5. So I will have to play this opening as both black and white. Each player should work out what is the opening that they will play for both black and white, and start work on it to understand it as well as possible. We looked at some today:

Wilamal playsthe Four Knights Opening as white and black
Harans plays the Scotch Opening as white and black
Ultimax2 plays the French as white and black
Queensgambit17 plays the Queen’s Gambit Declined as white and black
Chrisfu plays the Slav as white and black
Hbchess1 plays the Slav as white and black
Jfay plays the Four Knights Opening as white and black
Joshstar001 plays the Queen’s Gambit as white and black
Bobby0528 plays the Philidor as white and black
